5 out of 5 stars Great Machine 5+ Battery Life Win XP   January 1, 2009
I have owned this little treasure for 3 month now. Installed win xp sp2 from a SD Card. Use Ramdisk for all temp internet files and windows temp files. Uses the RAM as a drive keeping the writes off of the SSD. The 7 in screen uses less power and you get great Battery Life 5+ hours with the brightness around 30 percent. This is with a 5200 battery that shipped with my unit. I have heard some units ship with a 4200 so I dont know what machines ship with what battery.
Everything works like a charm even running WinXP. Ive heard people say its to slow? It Runs faster then my Full 64Bit Notebook running Vista. So I don't get its slow at all.. Keep your OS Simple and Its a great Running Machine.

Installed on SSD
Win XP SP2 with 76 Updates
Star Office Newest Free soft
OneNote 2003 full install
Skype
Aim
MSN Live Mess
Weatherbug
Newest Firefox Has ZOOM SO you don't have to scroll left and right
Logitec Mouse Soft Small wireless mouse for notebooks Very nice Must have!!
Nortons 2004 Just Antivirus
Adobe 9
Divx newest install
and a few others..
SSD drive free 1.2 GIGS

I use a SD 8 gb for downloads and all other file storage.
Bottom line, Great Machine with great batt Life. Used it every day.. People always ask about its cuteness..

Large storage I use a 2.5in USB 20 hard drive. Iomega at radio shack "INSTORE not online" Clearance 120 GB drive 2.5usb 44 dollars and a few other hard drives cheap you can pickup at add storage for your EEEPC.. Check radio shack out before they are all gone..
160 gb 2.5 usb 56 dollars

4 out of 5 stars Not Bad product, GREAT ordering experience.   December 22, 2008
Well, they had extremely fast shipping. The computer IS exactly what they said it would be in the description. I would not reccomend this product be used as a "main" computer as it is really small, and your hand tends to cramp up after typing on it after so long, plus it cannot hold any additional programs except the ones it comes with (unless you want to take the time to install a much larger hard-drive). It is a good little travel companion, though. Other than that, my overall ordering experience was great and I would definitely do business with them again!

5 out of 5 stars Perfect !!!   December 11, 2008
If all you need is access to the internet for browsing and email, then THIS is your computer. There's nothing that comes close for the price. You do have to consider the limitations of tiny "hunt and peck" keyboard and very little disk space. However, for times when I need a full-sized keyboard (which isn't very often) I purchased a portable fold-up keyboard.

The Wi-Fi connection is built in and very intuitive. The three USB ports provide enough connections to add things like a wireless mouse, disk and keyboard.

However, if I leave for a short trip, I just put this little computer in the over-nighter and go.
I highly recommend this to anyone who only needs internet access. At $250 I consider this a bargain. Again, there's nothing else out there within $300 that meets this basic need. I did considerable shopping and the next size REAL laptop was $300 more than this one.

4 out of 5 stars Slow encrypted wireless connection, otherwise great   December 6, 2008
I bought this because I travel a lot and needed a small, light weight PC. This fit the bill perfectly. I use a large cloth cosmetic case and usually don't have to take it out when going thru security. It pops right into my purse. A few things I had problems with -- (1) the small keyboard takes getting use to. I finally cut my nails which helped in my case. (2) the right shift key was awkward and I usually ended up hitting the "up" key. I finally corrected this by putting a small drop of glue on the "Shift" key which tells me I am on the right key. (3) The compressed screen is helped by pressing the "F11" which compresses the headings. (4) My biggest problem, and one that really detracted from my enjoyment during a six week trip to Europe was the connection to wireless networks. While it would connect immediately with an unencrypted network I could not get it to connect with either WEP or WAP in Europe. Hotel staff tried at several hotels but had no more luck than me. My call to the ASUS tech support put the blame on the hotels (7 of them?) and just dismissed my complaint. On arriving back in the states I went to my son's house who had an encrypted wireless router. It wouldn't work. He unlocked his router and it worked immediately. I called ASUS but they were too busy to take my call but promised to call back. They never did but in the meantime my son had re-encrypted his router and I tried to connect. It didn't connect but I left it on (it was pending) while waiting for the call back and to my surprise it connected, after about 20 minutes. I disconnected and tried it again. Once again, 20 minutes to connect. I don't know what to do about that and if anyone has a solution it would be appreciated. Otherwise I love this little darling. I use my airline earphones to listen to talk radio and music (not on the airplane) and love the fast power on.

5 out of 5 stars Great Motorcycle Traveling Companion   November 25, 2008

I wont duplicate all the previous reviews. I want to add that this little unit is great for traveling with on a motorcycle. I have had it for nearly a year, and its nowhere near as finicky about rough handling as a full size (and expensive) laptop. Once it's slipped into the DVD player case I bought for it, along with the charger, USB retractable travel mouse, and a little laptop light, its ready for the rough and tumble world of riding around tucked into a saddlebag.

Full size laptops are cumbersome to carry on a bike, but this thing is quite happy, with no worries because of the Solid State Drive. Plus this PC works great for checking email, surfing and playing media. Lots of places now have free or low-cost wifi, and this little unit finds them and connects easily. I can take digital pics and movies with my camera, plug the SD card into the slot, and easily share pics and videos with friends along the way.

The screen is small, and the tiny keys arent really 'biker friendly', but I dont use it to write the Great American Novel anyway. I do have a cheap $80 desktop monitor that I can plug into, and that makes doing things much easier when I bring it home.

Two other previous laptops I have owned were huge disappointments in terms of usability and durability, but this little 701 is 'just right'.
